ice cream cupsAccording to research conducted by NPD Group, 40% of Americans will eat ice cream during any given two-week period. But how many of us choose to eat it for breakfast? While some may think that eating eggs or toast is better fuel for our bodies and brains, a recent Japanese study actually showed that consuming frozen desserts like ice cream first thing in the morning may actually make you smarter.

The clinical trial, conducted out of Tokyo's Kyorin University, showed that people who consumed ice cream cups right after they woke up scored better on mental tests than those who didn't. This is great news for lovers of gelato and frozen yogurt cups -- it might give us yet another excuse to eat ice cream cups! After all, they've proven to be good for us!

Some nutritionists have noted that the higher test scores associated with ice cream eaters might be actually attributed to the fact that they ate something. It might not be solely because of the wonderful properties of frozen dessert cups. But then again, that's not a definitive reason not to eat ice cream for breakfast, either!

And ice cream cups might do more than power our brains. One University of Rome researcher recently developed a recipe for gelato that may actually help enhance athletic performance! In other words, athletes could actually be fueled by delicious gelato cups in the near future. The gelato recipe contains loads of antioxidants that are delivered in a much more effective way; because gelato isn't cooked, these antioxidants don't lose their potency. While there's no release date in sight, researchers are currently developing green tea, hazelnut, and classic chocolate flavors.

So while it's not totally scientifically verified that eating ice cream can help us improve our test scores or our athletic abilities, there's reason to hope that, one day soon, we'll actually want to eat these frozen treats for the sake of our health. In the meantime, there's nothing wrong with throwing an ice cream party to celebrate these delicious indulgences.
