A Michigan Ice Cream Parlor is Seeking Recruits to Eat Their Record-Breaking Half-Mile Ice Cream Dessert

Although June is the month when the most ice cream is produced, one ice cream parlor is getting a head start as it gears up to attempt the word record for longest ice cream dessert.

House of Flavors, a Michigan-based shop, plans to use more than 12,750 scoops of ice cream that will line up to eight blocks to build its monstrosity! And while the record is set to be broken this summer, House of Flavors isn’t wasting any time preparing.

As you can imagine, a half a mile of ice cream requires a sizable amount of volunteers with tasting spoons ready to plunge in. To help this extremely sweet and delicious cause, the parlor is recruiting thousands of volunteers to break the record. They are looking for more than 6,000 people to eat two scoops of ice cream each, 1,000 volunteers to make the dessert and to assist with others tasks, and 16 block captains, who will ultimately oversee mini parties surrounding each dessert on the subsequent block. Considering that 90% of American households regularly indulge in ice cream and ice cream cups, finding volunteers shouldn’t be too difficult.

If you think this sounds crazy, then you’ll be floored to discover that this record has been set before, and is currently being held by the city of Auckland, New Zealand. In February of 2015, the city built and ate an ice cream sundae that measured out to a whopping 1,957 feet. Now that’s a lot of ice cream.

In order to qualify for the world record, the dessert has to be one continuous item and must be entirely edible. House of Flavor plans to have the scoops touching each other, without spaces or breaks. That means using no ice cream cups at all or using one very long dish -- either way, it sounds delicious!

There are 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream produced in the U.S. each year, and now you know where a whole lot of it is going!
